Arriving in a foreign city is never an easy task. Here
are a few tips and tricks for a smooth landing. Always change money before heading
into town, since paying in foreign currency is a sure way to get ripped off.
If without a mobile phone, buy a 2 or 5Ls Lattelekom phone card or a 5 or 10Ls Interkarte pre-paid card for all public telephones. Places selling phone cards are marked with a Telekarte sign.
Arriving by plane
|The airport (Lidosta) is13
kilometres south-east of Riga.
Customs and baggage claim are fairly quick. You can buy a visa on arrival at the airport. Carts are free of charge and plentiful after passport control.
Branches of Hansabanka and Parekss banka are located in the public area and Latekobanka currency exchange offices provide services also airside.The currency exchange office open 06:00 - 23:00.
In case you have not managed to make a prior reservation, you are welcome to reservations office located in the arrival area on the 1st level of the terminal building. Phone (+371) 7207184, fax (+371) 7207182. Open daily between 10:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m.
Latvian Mobile Telephone Customer service centre is located in arrival area on the 1st level of the terminal. Open daily between 10:00 a.m. and 11:30 p.m. and between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. on Sundays. Telephone +(371) 7207567, fax +(371) 7207341.
Public card telephones are located throughout the terminal both on the 1st and the 2nd level. Phone cards can be obtained at the post office and shops.
Getting to town. Bus No.22, which leaves from Abrenes Street, has direct services between the airport and the city centre. You will get out straight at the terminal on the 2nd level. To get on the bus at the airport look for bus stop located opposite the terminal behind the car park. Frequency 10 - 30 minutes from 5:30 a.m. to 10:40 p.m. Journey time about 30 minutes. Fare 0.20 LVL.
Bus No.22A connects the airport with hotels in the centre of Riga.
Several hotels provide shuttle service to and from the airport.
The airport has signed contract on taxi services
with Riga Taxi Park. The company office is located on the 1st level of
arrival area. Working hours adjusted to flight schedule. Telephone +(371)
7207509. Journey time to the centre of the city is 15 minutes. Charge
0.40 LVL plus 0.35 per kilometre. Getting to the centre of the city would
cost about 5 LVL.
The train station (Centrala stacija) consists of two halls:
the big hall for international trains and the small hall for local trains.
You can change money at Parex Bank's currency exchange (valutas maina), immediately on your right when coming from the tracks. Open 08:30 - 21:30. You can buy phone cards to call home or your friends from the telephone centre on your left.
There is a baggage room (bagazas glabatuve) in the basement (stairs lead down from the toilets). Automatic lockers frequented by local traders stand in the baggage room next to track N°6. Open 04:00 - 01:00.
For information turn to the dzelzcela uzzinu birojs in the main hall. Open 07:30 - 13:30, 14:30 - 21:00.
Avoid taxis if you can. The drivers will not move for less than 2 Ls, and they sometimes send you to the cabbies at the back of the line who are more likely to bother taking you to your destination. Anyway you are right beside the Old Town. Just turn left when leaving the station and head toward the black spire of St. Peter's Church, then walk through the underpass and follow the signs 13. Janvara iela and turn right into Aspazijas bulvaris.
Public transport Tickets - 20 santimi.
Arriving by bus
The bus terminal (Autoosta) sits just a few hundred metres
from the train station and adjacent to the central market. Open 05:00 - 24:00.
There is currency exchange.
Check your bags at the baggage room on the left side in the hall. Open 05:30 - 23:00. There are card phones in front of the baggage room. Phone cards can be bought at the kiosk around the corner.
Getting to the centre. The bus, tram and trolleybus tickets for 20 santimi. Tram N°7 stops in front of the bus station; ride it one stop further into the centre. To get there by foot, turn left, walk through the underpass and follow the signs Vecriga-Valnu iela into Old Riga.
The ferry terminal lies north of the Old Town. You can change money at the currency exchange. Open during arrivals.
Getting to town. Take trams N°7, 5 or 9, at Ausekla iela stop, and ride two stops to downtown Riga.
